Friday 02 May Harness ‘Final Field’ Wagering Report

A total of 14 ‘Final Field’ wagering races were carded tonight with the ‘Pacific Sheet & Coil Rowe Cup’ the feature event.
We opened the Group 1 races at Alexandra Park (4, 5,6 & 7) on Tuesday and Running On Time in the Breckon Bloodstock Trotting Derby was easily the best backed runner in early trading and his opening odds of $7.50 were into $4.00 by 1:00pm raceday.

Auckland T.C.

Race 1 – 1st Strike Up The Band opened $2.40 & closed $2.40 – Largest wager $2,000 at $2.40
James Ryan (3rd) $1,500 at $3.80 & $1,500 at $3.80
We lost a small amount on the winner but James Ryan (3rd) closed as our worst result. Not a good start for the ‘book’ with the favourite winning and he was well backed in multi-wagers so will be hoping he’s not the first of a number of favourite’s to win on the night.

Race 2 – 1st Tennis Ball opened $4.80 & $4.80 – Largest wager $2,500 at $4.80
Absolute Magic (6th) $5,000 at $1.40, $2,000 at $1.40 (X2), $2,000 at $1.50 & $1,500 at $1.40
This race closed with a huge wagering handle and some large multi-wagers going through the favourite Absolute Magic. The liability was so bad on the favourite that we had to drift the second favourite’s odds out to get some money in to balance the ledger and at $6.00 it wasn’t hard to achieve that. We hope a few took the $6.00 because it will be a long time before you see us again offering up those odds on Tennis Ball.  We broke even on the winner in single wagering but in multi-wagering it was a huge result for us.

Race 3 – 1st Mystic Mink opened $16 & closed $18 – Largest wager $20 at $18
Itz Cherry Ripe (2nd) $2,000 at $2.60, $1,250 at $2.60 & $1,000 at $2.60 (X2)
Jazz Bromac (4th) $1,000 at $3.80 (X3)
We were only losing on one runner in this race and that was on the favourite who we did open up reasonably short at $2.10 knowing that she  would take most multi-wagers on the race. The favourite closed the tote at $2.50 and we were $2.60 five minutes from post-time and at that price she was an easy runner to sell. The winner was unwanted in the betting so were happy to see her hold out the favourite. Other than the favourite all the late money was for Jazz Bromac (4th).

Race 4 – 1st Sovereignty opened $1.50 & closed $1.80 – Largest wager $2,000 at $1.80
Running On Time (2nd) $5,000 at $4.00, $3,000 at $7.50 & $2,000 at $4.00
The Ultimate Galleon (8th) $1,000 at $16
We opened Sovereignty up as a hot favourite on Tuesday at $1.50 and with that runner so short we had to put up the second favourite Running On Time at $7.50 and the money never stopped coming for the Murray Edmonds trained three year old. Customers obviously thought we were giving better value than a Ben’s Bargain Bazaar because at tote close Running On Time was a shocking result for ‘the book’.  It’s not that often that we cheer home a favourite at Alexandra Park but on this occasion we were happy to see one win. Sovereignty was well backed in multi-wagers but the second placed runner wasn’t that far behind in that department.

Race 5 – 1st Arden Banner opened $14 & closed $16 – Largest wager $60 at $16
Twist N Shout (4th) $500 at $61
Hemisphere (5th) $1,000 at $2.80 (X2)
Alexis (10th) $1,000 at $3.40 (X3)
We opened Twist N Shout (4th) up at $41 (closed $36 tote) and she closed as easily our worst result over Arden’s Darlin (2nd) which was the runner all the late money was for. The winner didn’t attract much support at all and she was a great result. The first two favourites Hemisphere and Alexis once again proved to be costly for the majority of our customers.

Race 6– 1st Our Sunny Whizz opened $2.10 & closed $2.10 – Largest wager $8,000 at $2.10
Our Sunny Whizz also $2,000 at $2.40 (X3) & $1,500 at $2.40 (X2)
Romper Stomper (5th) $1,000 at $15 & $1,000 at $15
Awesome Imace (13th) $2,000 at $15
The winner was the best backed runner and she closed a losing result but the worst result was by far Romper Stomper (5th) who opened at $18 (closed $8.50 Final Field & $7.40 tote) with Mountbatten (9th) the next worst losing result. When we opened the market on this race on Tuesday we wanted to price Our Sunny Whizz at around $2.00 as we thought she was a good thing after her win a fortnight ago but in the first few days of trading it would have been easier to sell freezers to the Eskimos than getting a wager placed on her and we started to wonder if we had her too short. Inspire (4th) and Romper Stomper (5th) were the only two the early money went on and a day out if either of those two runners won it was going to be a shocking Cup result for us. One of our larger wagering customers placed an $8,000 wager on Our Sunny Whizz which did help to balance the book a little. The late money we thought would come for Houdini Star (7th) never arrived and we did drift his price out to $9.00 from his opening odds of $5.00.

Race 7 – 1st Gotta Go Cullen opened $3.60 & closed $4.00 – Largest wager $2,000 at $3.60
Changeover (2nd) $10,000 at $1.50, $3,000 at $1.50 (X3) & $2,000 at $1.50 (X5)
It was all one-way traffic in trading on the NZ Messenger and after we got knocked around last week on Changeover it was a good turnaround for the ‘book’ with the result going to the second favourite. We opened Changeover up at $1.50  which was his tote closing price and there were no shortage of takers at that price. Mr Molly (5th) took some late money but anything other than the favourite winning was always going to be a good result. No doubt the two favourites in this race will also dominate wagering on the Jewels and we already have a few large multi-wagers finishing on Changeover from last week so we will be keeping his Jewels odds very tight.

Race 8 – 1st Watch Him Trot opened $6.50 & closed $10 – Largest wager $25 at $6.50
Mountain Woman (2nd) $500 at $18
King Charlie (3rd) $1,500 at $8.00
Starcus (6th) $1,000 at $10
Calamity Gal (13th) $1,000 at $7.50
We closed this race losing on a number of runners with Battle Heights the worst followed by King Charlie and Calamity Gal.  All the late money was for Calamity Gal and King Charlie. The winner paid $15 on the tote which surprised us and we felt a little sad for the customer who had the largest wager $1,000 at odds of $6.50 but we did open a number of runners in this race at well over their closing tote odds.

Race 9 – 1st Ohoka Moon opened $4.50 & closed $7.00 – Largest wager $100 at $4.50
Running On Faith (2nd) $3,400 at $2.80, $3,000 at $2.80, $2,000 at $3.00, $2,000 at $2.80 & $1,500 at $2.80
The Adman (7th) $1,000 at $18
Power Of Tara (6th) $1,000 at $6.50
We closed betting losing heavily on the favourite and at $2.80 (closed $2.10 tote) she was an easy runner to lay. Once again we waited for the money to come for the winner but it never happened, we thought she was well placed in this race so we kept her safe in trading and she was a huge result for us. Hard to believe’ the book’ actually had a great winning result on a Steven Reid trained horse, but we think that only now makes the score 41 -1 in his favour.

Race 10 – 1st Captain Bushrat opened $5.00 & closed $5.50 – Largest wager $500 at $5.00
Spy (2nd) $1,000 at $2.20 (X3)
Eisenhower (5th) $2,000 at $4.60 & $1,000 at $4.60
We lost a small amount on the winner and the only other losing result on the race was Eisenhower. There were no large multi-wagers finishing on the winner which isn’t often the situation on the last Final Field race at Alexandra Park.

NZ Metro T.C.

Race 1 – 1st Cut And Style opened $4.60 & closed $4.60 – Largest wager $350 at $4.60
Magical Mach (2nd) $2,000 at $2.80, $1,200 at $2.80 & $500 at $2.50
The winner Cut And Style paid $5.30 on the tote and we never moved from our opening price so we were left wondering why we lost on the race especially when we hadn’t really taken any large wagers on her, then we remembered that Robert Dunn trains the winner and that stable always attracts strong support in Final Field wagering so that solved that query. Island Sunrise (12th) closed as our worst result over Cut And Style. The favourite Magical Mach (2nd) was heavily backed in multi-wagers so that was one plus for us.

Race 3 – 1st Clever Vance opened $17 & closed $21 – Largest wager $100 at $18
Suvarno Hanover (4th) $1,000 at $9.00 & $1,000 at $5.50
West Coast Anvil (6th) $1,000 at $5.50
Comebackmach (8th) $1,000 at $4.50
The late money came for the outsider Maronan Girl (9th) who closed at $18 and she closed as our worst result over Suvarno Hanover (4th) who closed at $5.50 after drifting out to $9.00 at one stage. Comebachmach (8th) didn’t get any early money but was the best late backed runner closing at $4.50 which was his opening price. The winner was unwanted and closed as a great result for the ‘book’.

Race 6 – 1st Jumanji Franco opened $3.50 & closed $3.50 – Largest wager $1,000 at $3.50
Shing Bromac (5th) $1,500 at $4.00, $600 at $4.00 & $500 at $4.00
The only losing result on this race was on the favourite Shing Bromac who closed the tote favourite but luckily for us we always had the winner as the favourite. The two year old Jewels markets will open next week and on the result tonight it won’t be hard to find the opening favourite.

Race 9 – 1st Racey Product opened $7.50 & closed $5.50 – Largest wager $600 at $7.50
Montrose Kid (7th) $1,000 at $8.00
The winner was our worst result on the night and although he was never heavily backed there were plenty of customers shopping around for value with wagers around the $200 - $400 mark placed on him. The late money came for the winner along with Montrose Kid (7th) and Millburn Michael (10th).

A tough night for our customers with Changeover the big factor in that equation but we are sure he will reward his loyal followers very soon. Next Saturday the ‘book’ will have Final Field wagering available on all races from the day meeting at Addington Raceway where the feature event is the Group 1 Nevele R Fillies Series Final.
