Betting report 29 August

September 1st, 2008

Friday 29 August – MZ Metro T.C.

Race 1: ‘Perfect For Now’ opened $3.80 & closed $3.50

The ‘book’ held a small loss on the winner but easily the best backed was Gammel Danske ($5.00 - $4.40). The early morning money was for Ulter Boy (9th) who opened at $9.00 but after around 1:00pm

trading on that runner went quiet and he closed at $15. The favourite did get customer’s off to a good

start in multi’s.

Race 2: ‘Belle Eyre’ opened $10 & closed $11

The winner was well supported in the morning and her price did come into $8.00 around 10:00am on the

weight of money. There were no big wagers on her just plenty around the $100 - $200 mark. The best backed runner closer to post-time was Chief Inanga (8th) who has proved to be a costly runner for our

customers over the past two weeks. Mocca Man (4th) was the best backed runner in multi trading, he

opened at $3.00 and closed at that price. The winner closed a good result for the ‘book’.

Race 4: ‘Scotlynn Hamish’ opened $2.60 & closed $2.20

The favourite Scotlynn Hamish didn’t get backed in the morning but we did take some large multi-wagers on him as soon as the ‘book’ opened. Dream Supreme (2nd) was the best backed runner late along with Navy Cross ($7.50 - $4.80). We lost on the favourite and plenty of multi’s were well on their

way into the later races.

Race 5: ‘Del’s Hoof N It’ opened $6.00 & closed $7.00

We opened Moment Of Truth (3rd) at $5.00 and as soon as we opened $1,000 and $500 wagers went on him. He closed at $2.20 on the ‘book’ and $2.60 the tote a price that surprised us and he would have done some damage had he won. The winner Del’s Hoof N It repeated his last start performance with an

easy win but he did have an easier trip that the favourite. The late money came for The Fat Controller which opened our $2.60 favourite (closed $3.00 final Field and $2.80 tote).

Race 6: ‘Be Artful’ opened $7.00 & closed $4.00

We will have to start to show Be Artful a bit more respect as this is the second week we have opened him up at well over tote closing price. He only won by a nose but that was enough to do some damage

to the ‘book’ as he was once again well backed in early trading. The late money came for Partywiththehotgirl (2nd opened $7.00 - $6.00). The favourite Charisteas (4th) was the best backed in multi trading and was

an unlucky runner coming from the back in a race run with a quick last half so he will be kept safe again

next time he starts.

Race 7: ‘Special Ops’ opened $6.00 & closed $8.00

We had a few calls telling us we had the first two favourites around the wrong way but we knew it was going to be easy to sell both runners and the only damage would come in multi betting. We took $3,000 bets on both London Legend and Ohoka Rebel and a few $1,000 wagers on them. London Legend did close as our only losing result but trading on the race was steady all day and it was never going to be a

bad result in the single trading ‘book’. The winner took a few wagers but the two favourites did scare off most wanting to get involved heavily on the remainder of the field.

Race 8: ‘Domination’ opened $7.50 & closed $12

As expected the favourite Makarewa Sun (2nd) was all customers wanted to be on in multu trading and we thought the $1.60 opening price would keep the liability on this horse under control but that was far from what happened as the money just kept coming for him. He closed $1.40 with the ‘book’ and $1.50 the tote, on his run after an early break and a late storming run home for second we doubt we will be offering up opening odds of $1.60 next time he lines up. We closed the winner well over our opening price but it was hard to sell any other runner no matter what price we put up. No surprise that this result

was a good one for the ‘book.

Race 9: ‘Majhac Meddle’ opened $5.50 & closed $9.00

With only two of the previous seven ‘final field’ races on the night won by favourites customers came looking to recoup their loss’s on Music Man which closed at $1.80 after opening at $2.40. The winner took a couple of reasonably sized wagers but did still close a winning result for the ‘book’

A tough night for our customers with a number of well backed favourites getting beaten but it was a

pleasant trend reversal from what the ‘book’ has experienced over the past few weeks.

Biggest winning multi on the night: $100 to win $8,970 -  Scotlynn Hamish $2.30, Del’s Hoof N It $6.00 & Special Ops $6.00.

The report on large wagers in will return next week, the harness desk had the night off and it was left in the capable hands of our rugby league boomaker KG (Kevin Gutschlag) to trade . Kevin is Southland bred and as one would expect coming from that region has a harness background.  Looking at the night’s overall result for the ‘book’ it might pay if the desk has a few more Friday nights off.

Final Field wagering from Friday at Alexandra Park

August 9th, 2008
Harness ‘Final Field’ Wagering Report

Auckland T.C. - Friday 08 August

Race 1 1st Holtere opened $4.80 & closed $4.20 – Largest wager $1,000 at $4.50

The winner ‘Holtere’ was the best backed runner in the field followed by ‘Trot West Defender’ (2nd) which opened the ‘book’ favourite at $4.60. Last start winner ‘Jonny English’ (3rd) took some late money and closed in $1.00 shorter than his opening price of $13.

Race 3 1st Itz Cherry Ripe opened $1.70 & closed $1.60 – Largest wager $3,500 at $1.60

It was hard to sell any other runner than the favourite Itz Cherry Ripe and she took all the late money to close as our only losing result. Return To Gold (6th) was the next best backed runner but even after pushing her price out from an opening price of $5.50 to $6.50 punter’s really only wanted to be on the favourite.

Race 41st Sea Spray Darling opened $5.00 & closed $5.50 – Largest wager $700 at $5.50

Eskimo Banker (3rd) $1,000 at $5.00

Indian Wells (6th) $508 at $9.00

China Chinko (8th) $1,000 at $3.00

Castletons Boy (9th) $500 at $11

We kept the winner Sea Spray Darling safe but late money did come for her once driver Maurice McKendry tipped her out as a strong chance on Trackside and she closed as our worst result (M McKendry just got crossed off our xmas list). Early morning money came for Indian Wells who closed at $8.00 after opening at $11. Eskimo Banker (3rd) was also well backed late but did close at $5.00 on the ‘book’ ($4.30 tote) after opening at $4.50.

Race 51st Clonmel opened at $10 & closed at $9.00 – Largest wager $300 at $8.00

Aquadelmo (11th) $500 at $6.50

Threesacrowd (2nd) opened the second favourite on the ‘book’ at $5.50 and closed at $4.40 after taking most of the late money. Overall it was a poor trading race but with little form in the race we guess it was just as hard for punters to pick the field as what it was for us to price it. The winner Clonmel did attract a couple of late wagers around the $300 mark and closed as a small losing result.

Race 71st All Tiger opened at $1.70 & closed $1.60 – Largest wager $3,000 at $1.50

Mr Whoudini (6th) $1,000 at $10

We tried to keep the winner All Tiger safe but even when the ‘book’ had him at $1.50 and the tote was $1.90 the money just kept coming for him and we held plenty of wagers from $1,000 - $2,000 on him. We did manage to sell a couple of runners in particular Mr Whoudinni and we closed only losing a small amount on the favourite.

Race 8 1st Zenad opened at $5.50 & closed at $6.00 – Largest wager $550 at $5.50

Retail Therapy (2nd) $2,500 at $1.75

Retail Therapy was a runner that we wanted to risk as we thought the 20m handicap could be a stumbling block but after All Tiger’s race was resulted we had a $300 multi finishing on him to return $101,376 so we had no option to keep his price at our opening odds of $1.60. The six leg multi was - Itz Cherry Ripe ($1.60), Sea Spray Darling ($5.50), Clonmel ($11), All Tiger ($1.50), Mr Jazz ($1.60 greyhound) all winners finishing on Retail Therapy at $1.60.

We risked Mystic Mink in the single market but we were never going to get close to reducing our liability on the race and she did close as our only losing result. The winner Zenad was a good result in the single book but there was a multi for about $15,000 finishing on him.

Race 9 1st Genius opened at $6.00 & closed at $10 – Largest wager $50 at $6.50

Fayanni (2nd) $1,000 at $3.60

Dutch Annie (6th) $2,000 at $3.00, & $1,000 at $2.80 (X2)

We opened Genius up short after taking plenty of money for him in his last two starts but tonight he was unwanted and he closed a huge result for us. Dutch Annie was the only runner punters wanted to be on and she closed as our only losing result in the single ‘book’. We had a couple of reasonable sized multi’s finishing on Fayanni and Dutch Annie which no doubt would have been a lot bigger if Retail Therapy had won the previous race.

A tough way to get into the new season facing a 100k multi payout in what looked to be a reasonably quiet night at the start of the day.
